Throughout New England and New York, the Northeast Arc Users Group (NEARC) stands as a prominent U.S. volunteer organization dedicated to leveraging the power of Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and a suite of mobile applications.

NEARC organizes two annual regional user conferences for technical training while fostering a sense of community. This year’s NEARC Spring Conference at The University of Rhode Island in Kingston provided a vibrant space for AEC professionals, students, and GIS enthusiasts representing government, wildlife and ecology agencies to learn, collaborate, and network.

Exhibitor attendees included Dawood Senior Geospatial Specialist and New England Chapter of the Urban and Regional Information Systems Association (NEURISA) Director-At-Large Tim Woodfield, GISP, and fellow NEURISA board members. Deeply connected to the region’s GIS community, Dawood is an annual sponsor of NEURISA—an organization focused on GIS professional development complementing NEARC’s technical Esri focus.

ArcGIS Updates

Throughout NEARC’s Spring Conference Esri delivered a series of engaging sessions that showcased new features, upcoming developments, and impressive technical product demonstrations.

  1. First, the ArcGIS Online “What’s New” presentation unveiled exciting web map conveniences and improved workflow enhancements.

For example, captivating new symbology styles and the ability to create attribute expressions within the symbology window, enhanced heat maps, and category grouping functionality enable users to develop dynamic and compelling data displays.

Instant App upgrades promising faster spin-up times for internal analysis and client programs also garnered attention.

  1. Next, attendees received insightful Experience Builder and Field Maps demos—essential applications for Dawood’s GIS department.

Experience Builder offers a wide range of templates, layouts, and pages providing a quick project starting point. It enables full widget customization for a personalized user experience and integration with Survey123 or Operations Dashboards. The Field Maps mobile app now features conditional filtering and auto-population—accelerating speed and improving data quality during collection.
