Throughout New England and New York, the Northeast Arc Users Group (NEARC) stands as a prominent US volunteer organization dedicated to leveraging the power of Esri GIS software, including ArcGIS, ArcGIS Online, and a suite of mobile applications.

NEARC organizes two annual regional user conferences for technical training while fostering a sense of community. This year’s NEARC Spring Conference at The University of Rhode Island in Kingston provided a vibrant space for GIS enthusiasts and professionals to learn, collaborate, and network.

Real-World ArcGIS Applications

Following high-level Esri product updates, the NEARC conference featured use cases from several organizations demonstrating ArcGIS in action.

The Connecticut Transportation Safety Research Center took the stage and presented their latest achievement—an enhanced Connecticut Crash Data Repository (CTCDR). This cutting-edge tool provides users a way to access, analyze, and export crash data specific to the state of Connecticut. CTCDR dashboard, story maps, and reporting and query tools provided a fascinating glimpse into how government agencies curate, display, and distribute this crucial information—empowering decision makers to effectively analyze and visualize data and take more informed actions enhancing road safety.

Outside, multiple drone demonstrations conveyed the importance of GIS with LiDAR scanning, imagery capture, data collection, and safety. For example, drone drop deployment systems swiftly deliver life-saving equipment such as inflatable life preservers in emergency situations like rip currents for individuals in distress, or EpiPens to hikers in need.
