Dawood Engineering Promotes James Wiswell to Lead New England Survey Operations

Operations

(Braintree, Mass.) Dawood, an international engineering and technology firm, has elevated James Wiswell to lead New England surveying operations. With more than 45 years of experience, Wiswell manages diverse mobile mapping, scanning, aerial, and conventional ground surveying projects.

“Jim’s survey experience is diverse—ranging from roads,  bridges, and railroads to water, sewer, and substation infrastructure improvement projects and right-of-way surveys,” said Joab (Jody) Carter, PLS, director of surveying with Dawood. “He’s well-equipped to guide our regional crews on surveying and scanning best practices and deliver results.”

For the City of Boston’s Rutherford Avenue/Sullivan Square Design Project, Wiswell managed a multi-year assignment capturing data through mobile LiDAR and laser scanning—reducing the need for surveyors working on the streets near high-volume traffic. Aerial photography was used to prepare topographic mapping as the basis to complete a comprehensive utility inventory.

Wiswell integrates various data sources using industry-leading instrumentation and software—including AutoDesk, Bentley, Bluebeam, Carlson, Trimble, and Newforma—to manage base and layout plan preparation. His teams capture data efficiently and safely to help clients navigate large programs.

In addition to Massachusetts Bay Transportation Authority bus accessibility improvements, Wiswell has managed surveying services for the Massachusetts Department of Transportation involving existing conditions surveys, layout and right-of-way plans, and hundreds of ADA ramp retrofit projects throughout Districts 1, 5, and 6. Tasks included laser scanning, mobile LiDAR, and utility data gathering from surface, structural, and record evidence.

A Massachusetts’ Wentworth Institute of Technology graduate, Wiswell holds an Associate of Science degree in civil engineering technology.
