Senior Geospatial Specialist Tim Woodfield, GISP, Advances GIS Innovation and Industry Leadership

Tim Woodfield, GISP, blends hands-on expertise with a passion for data-driven storytelling and a career rooted in environmental science and GIS technology. He leads innovative geospatial solutions across infrastructure and utility projects while giving back to the professional community through leadership roles with the Geospatial Professional Network of New England (GPN-NE).

Talk about your Geospatial Professionals Network (GPN) role.

In my latest GPN (formerly NEURISA), New England, board role I serve as 2025 Treasurer. GPN is a non-profit GIS focused on “advancing the effective and appropriate use of GIS and related information technologies to solve challenges throughout the New England region.” Dawood supports and sponsors the annual conference for GPN New England where I maintain active board positions.

What does your role as Senior Geospatial Specialist involve?

I deliver GIS and project management solutions for pipeline, environmental, and geotechnical initiatives, with broad experience supporting the utility and transportation sectors. I specialize in asset management and field data collection using Esri’s suite of applications, and lead spatial analysis, network geometries, figure generation, atlas-style map books, and interactive online mapping. Our award-winning work in the utility space is continually recognized by Esri.

You started out in environmental science. What led you to pursue a more technical path?

I had the environmental and GIS background coming out of college with an interest in planning and design. When I had the opportunity to work at Dawood, I jumped into supporting municipal governments and utilities on construction projects, infrastructure inspections, and all things related to asset management, public engagement, and education.

What was your role in Dawood’s award-winning land management portal?

I created geoenabling spreadsheet workflows as part of a multi-phased Southern Company Gas Illinois pipeline construction project. The portal included Esri Dashboards, Survey123, Web Maps, and Story Maps, enabling the project team to access, integrate, and assess easement acquisition data in real time to make informed decisions.

How do you engage with Esri in your day-to-day work?

As part of Dawood’s Esri business partner relationship, I participate in beta testing, troubleshoot new software releases, and continually pursue professional development through training and certification. Our geospatial technologies team designs and deploys custom online mapping tools and web applications using the Esri platform. I led Dawood’s transition to ArcGIS Pro and remain actively involved in ArcGIS Online development, field data workflows, and site administration.

Tell us about your award-winning internal workflows.

I led the application development and maintenance of an Esri award-winning Construction Inspection tool to upgrade and streamline a paper-based workflow for field data collection and office review. By utilizing Survey123, Dashboards, and webhooks, our team cut administrative time by 80%!
