Dawood conducted Road Safety Audits for PennDOT District 8-0 in Dauphin, Adams, and York Counties. Per the Federal Highway Administration, a ‘Road Safety Audit (RSA) is the formal safety performance examination of an existing or future road or intersection by an independent, multidisciplinary team. It qualitatively estimates and reports on potential road safety issues and identifies opportunities for improvements in safety for all road users.’ Operational characteristics such as the average daily traffic, the type, severity and location of crashes, number of lanes, the percentage of trucks were recorded to better understand the crash causations. Crash cluster locations were identified and recommendations for safety improvements were made. Field views and office meetings were conducted with PennDOT staff, municipal officials, FHWA staff, and local police. Input from local officials was instrumental in developing context sensitive solutions that would be embraced by the local communities.
