Partnering with Wallace Montgomery, Dawood provided surveying, pavement design, and American with Disabilities Act (ADA) ramp design as part of converting a 66-year-old, three-lane, one-way street into a two-way, two-lane street for the City of Harrisburg. This North Second Street project aligns with the city’s Vision Zero program aimed to eliminate traffic fatalities by 2030.
Focused on reducing motorist speeds and creating a more multimodal-friendly environment from Division to Forster Streets, North Second Street traffic calming elements include replacing three traffic signals with mini-roundabouts, shared bicycle facilities, and raised crosswalks with curb extensions to improve pedestrian visibility and safety.
In addition to elevating safety for pedestrians, commuters, bus transit riders, and bicyclists, the revitalized project area features green infrastructure and better curb and parking space management. To improve accessibility, Dawood’s ADA ramp designs encompassed 140 locations.
