Design Build of Six Water Crossings in Three PA State Forests

According to a 2018 report completed by the Pennsylvania Parks and Forests Foundation (PPFF), the average age of infrastructure like bridges and buildings within Pennsylvania’s state parks and forests is 50 years old. There is a long list of infrastructure in need of maintenance, repair, and/or replacement that staff at those locations do not have the resources to address personally. Therefore, the Pennsylvania Department of Conservation and Natural Resources (DCNR), the government agency that oversees all 121 state parks and 2 million acres of state forest land, awarded Dawood Engineering, Inc. (Dawood) as a sub-contractor to LTT Construction in 2017 to provide design build services for six water crossing projects in three state forests.

The six projects involved 2 concrete rigid frames, 3 concrete box culverts, and 1 corrugated metal pipe.

At all but one site, due to the high-quality designation of the streams all associated wetlands were deemed Exceptional Value. To minimize erosion that could affect the streams and wetlands, trees felled within the limit of disturbance had stumps and root systems left in place.
