Survey Field Technician & Drafter Justin McFadden, sUAS, Achieves New Heights

As part of Dawood’s ongoing efforts to shine a light on one of our core disciplines, this Spring we sat down with Justin McFadden, sUAS—an integral part of our Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, surveying team who actively supports transportation projects and recently obtained his remote pilot certification.

Describe your duties as a drone pilot.

My day kicks off with pre-flight meetings where I map out the drone’s path, timeline, and altitude for upcoming projects. Once ready, I head to the job site and place the drone in a safe area from vehicles or workers, such as an open field. I capture comprehensive footage that can take a few hours or several days, depending on needs. I transfer the results to the project manager when finished.

How do you ensure safety during a drone flight?

Safety isn’t just a protocol—it’s a commitment. Our team adheres to Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulations to secure flight pre-authorization and identify potential hazards, including weather conditions or nearby airports. In addition, drones have a height limit to safeguard aircraft and avoid accidents.

Can you cite an example of how you and the Dawood team overcame project challenges?

As part of Dawood’s Heritage Village Subdivision/Land Development Plan and Connector Road Construction Plan in Cumberland County, Pennsylvania, our team utilized a drone to obtain updated rectified Ortho Photogrammetry required for the ALTA survey. In addition, the drone flew over the connector road in an otherwise inaccessible area—avoiding multiple surveyors having to navigate a busy and dangerous intersection.

To improve my drone flight management, I searched for hazards and shadowed the drone pilot. Having a spotter present when you’re operating a drone at a facility or transportation infrastructure project with high traffic and/or pedestrian activity is part of our best-practice procedures.

How has your remote pilot certification advanced your career?

Securing my certification improved my mapping, safety, and data and flight management skillset. It also reflects Dawood’s goal to integrate drone capabilities into our surveying practice, stay current with industry advancements, and expand my drone surveying knowledge on future projects.
