Meet Maysen Fisher, a sophomore Civil Engineering student at Syracuse University, returning for her second year with Dawood as a Transportation Design Intern. Based in Harrisburg, PA, Maysen brings a passion for creative problem-solving, sustainable infrastructure, and community-focused design. We caught up with her to explore what fuels her interest in engineering and how her experiences are shaping her path ahead.
Why engineering and what inspires you in the Dawood civil field?
Engineering is where creativity meets real-world impact. Even the smallest design detail can influence how people connect, move, and engage with their city. It offers the potential to design and build something that addresses real-world challenges with practical, creative solutions.
Civil engineering is how we solve complex problems and develop sustainable infrastructure that works for everyone.
For example, some of my early work at Dawood has involved ADA compliance and ramp design projects in Philadelphia, where I helped review curb ramps to ensure accessibility. I learned how small design elements like slope, landings, or alignment with crosswalks can make a meaningful difference in helping people navigate a city independently.
What’s one thing you’ve learned on the job that school didn’t teach you?
School didn’t fully prepare me for just how important communication is in engineering.
Technical accuracy is essential, but clear communication keeps a project on track. In class, assignments focus on getting the right answer; in the office and the field, success hinges on timely emails, thorough documentation, and knowing when to ask for clarification. Even the best design won’t work unless everyone is on the same page.
Outside of work and school, what are you passionate about?
I’m a lifelong sports enthusiast. Whether I’m playing or cheering other athletes on, sports have always been a big part of my life. They’ve taught me a lot about discipline, teamwork, and handling high-pressure situations—all skills that translate well into engineering and professional environments. I enjoy the competitive aspect, and they’re a great way for me to stay balanced, build connections, and keep me motivated in my personal life.
