Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge Survey Study 

Dawood delivers surveying and mapping solutions for the Leonard P. Zakim Bunker Hill Memorial Bridge upgrade and maintenance study. As a part of the Massachusetts Department of Transportation (MassDOT) District 6-0 and City of Boston study, the project involves potential maintenance and repair for the two-decade-old structure. 

Our team conducted conventional survey methods combined with mobile mapping LiDAR to safely and efficiently update basemapping. This included re-establishing horizontal and vertical controls and capturing planimetrics, topography, bridge superstructure, and utilities.   

We used the Trimble MX90 mobile mapping system to remote capture existing features on the bridge structure—supporting the project study for structural maintenance, deck profile evaluation, and potential future upgrades. This study includes concrete and joint repairs, bridge deck, joint, and facia cleanings, bearing, cable and wind tie maintenance, and vegetation removal. 

The Zakim bridge spans the Charles River and carries Interstate-93 across Boston’s Northern End. Opened in 2003 as part of the Boston Big Dig project, it is one of the widest cable-stayed bridges in the world and the first asymmetrical cable-stayed bridge in the U.S.
