International Women’s Day Profiles: Karolina Latka, Malgorzata Tomzik, Anna Suszalska, Laoise Baldrey

Karolina Latka

Dawood Engineering, Inc. / ArchiTube

Survey Technician

Ireland

Karolina Latka always wanted to work in surveying since it is not that common for women to collect data in the field. So, she began her surveying career in the beginning of 2020 with ArchiTube in Czestochowa, Poland. Dawood Engineering, Inc. then purchased that company in September 2021. Her work began with modeling installations in Revit. She had never tried 3-D modeling before but that was a highly interesting job for her since she was involved in several stages of projects. She was responsible for scanning the area and then presenting a 3-D reality.

Something interesting to note is that for her master thesis she analyzed the precision of smartwatches and smartphones with different navigation modules. Some were equipped with a GPS/GLONASS module, and some used just GPS. Karolina checked the watches’ and phones’ precision in movement (using a bicycle) and how different terrains (high buildings, lake layers, forests) affected that precision.

Malgorzata Tomzik

Dawood Engineering, Inc. / ArchiTube

Poland

Malgorzata Tomzik is a construction engineer and environmental engineer who sometimes does surveying work. After graduating in 2015 she immediately started working for ArchiTube in Poland, which was acquired by Dawood Engineering in 2021. She likes her job because every project is different and through each, she learns new skills. Modeling objects in 3-D is very interesting to her as well. Malgorzata thinks that Building Information Technology (BIM) is something that every engineer should be interested in, as it provides great opportunities for development. Her advice to other women looking to enter this field is to “Love your job, because then you won’t ‘work’ a single day.”

Anna Suszalska

Dawood Engineering, Inc. / ArchiTube

Poland

Anna Suszalska has been involved in surveying for many years since graduating with a degree in civil engineering. After graduation, she started working for ArchiTube, which became a part of Dawood Engineering in 2021. She says that since she was a child, she has been interested in construction equipment and curious about how large buildings and structures are built. Nowadays she knows that if she can’t do something right away, she can learn it.

Anna’s mother also studied civil engineering and was always an inspiration to her, showing that women can be in this profession. Nowadays, it is a little easier for women, but her mother always warned her that she would have to work harder to be considered equally good. If you are motivated enough to get into this field and know what to expect from the work, Anna says that will be a big help.

Laoise Baldrey

Dawood Engineering, Inc.

Ireland

Laoise Baldrey has been working within the surveying industry for two years. She was initially drawn to engineering, but after some research and discussions with her dad, she discovered surveying and decided that was the job for her. After graduating with a BS in Geomatics, Laoise began working for Dawood Engineering as a Survey Technician. She is now working towards a master’s in Applied Building Information Modeling and Management. Laoise says that one major positive about working within the surveying industry is how quickly things change, which gives opportunities for your career to progress. As it is such a small industry, new standards can be achieved quickly. She thinks this industry holds so much potential for women, especially those with an interest in engineering.
