The Importance of Safety Training

According to the Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) General Duty Clause, employers are required to provide a safe workplace free from hazards that cause, or are likely to cause, death or serious physical harm. Worker training and education are key for organizations to maintain a safe environment and adhere to OSHA standards.

Some employers may view formal safety training on equipment operation, industry regulations, workplace rules/procedures, and best practices as cumbersome—opting for informal, on-the-job training by site supervisors and experienced employees. This approach alone isn’t enough to provide new employees with the full picture.

Know the Risks

Informal training gives rise to an unsafe work environment. A veteran worker may teach a new employee their way of doing things—how to take shortcuts—rather than the correct procedure. If the employee doesn’t learn correct methods, he or she may not fully understand job hazards and the reason that procedure is in place.

Employees not properly trained may perform poor quality work and do their job slower. Trying to make-up time by working faster increases the chances of a mistake which could result in injury.
