Construction Inspector Tim Weston plays a critical role advancing our Pennsylvania commercial, retail, and municipal projects. In our latest Construction Appreciation Week spotlight, we learn how Tim’s sharp eye for civil engineering and land development plans keep projects on track.
1. Tell us about your responsibilities.
I communicate with project managers, contractors, and clients to ensure construction activities follow plan specifications. My responsibilities vary from inspecting stormwater and sanitary systems, sewers, curbs, and asphalt to documenting equipment, materials, weather, and photos. I also attend preconstruction meetings, review material testing and logs, draft safety and inspection reports, and calculate pay estimates.
2. Describe the inspection process.
I collaborate with project managers on-site to resolve emergencies and ensure contractors implement plans correctly. This includes verifying the soil type for structural foundation or reviewing the exact tree placements on properties. Improper supplies and tools can lead to development errors and costly delays.
3. You’ve been busy in West Manchester Township. Talk about your efforts there.
I played a key role in two West Manchester Township projects. For the township’s Westgate medical facilities, I inspected paving, drainage control, and sewer line construction for sewer extensions, buildings, and roadway development. Dawood’s second West Manchester project supported Sheetz gas station redevelopment, where I inspected underground storage and infiltration structures ensuring proper utility installation.
4. That’s a diverse list of assignments! What other municipal projects resonate?
Two projects stand out. My first example is Dawood’s Swatara Township Oberlin Intersection Improvement. In addition to our team’s ADA-compliant ramp designs, I inspected formwork, ramp layouts, slab thickness, and construction techniques. For the Derry Township Municipal Authority, our team worked on the wastewater treatment plant upgrade and expansion project. My duties involved reviewing shop drawing submittals, assessing health and safety plans, and providing on-site inspection.
5. What are your future goals?
I’m passionate about guiding the next generation of construction inspectors and technicians. I’d like to teach high school and college courses, inspiring more students to pursue careers in the AEC industry.
